Cam shaft oil seals are mainly used to prevent leaks of engine oil inside the cylinder head of engines with timing belt type and to prevent foreign substances from penetrating from the outside.
Since the temperature in the engine becomes extremely high, heat resistant materials are used for cam shaft oil seals and oil seals with its outer rubber- covered are used mainly.
In engines equipped with a timing chain system, there is no cam shaft oil seal because oil also circulates in the chain mechanism on the outside of the camshaft.

This oil seal is used on the pulley side of the engine block to prevent leaks of engine oil inside the crank case and also prevents foreign substances from penetrating from the outside.
For engines equipped with a timing chain, engine oil also circulates in the chain mechanism on the outside of the engine block, timing gear case (cover) oil seal plays the same role.
For engines equipped with a timing belt, as the timing belt is removed for replacement, camshaft seals also are very often replaced at the same time together with crank shaft seals.

This oil seal prevents leaks of engine lubrication oil in the oil pump and also foreign substances from penetrating from the outside.
In the past, there was a special oil seal exclusive for oil pump, but in recent years, this oil seal is installed on the front side of the crankshaft and shared with crank shaft oil seal.
This oil seal is made of heat-resistant material because of the extremely high temperature in the oil pump.

These seals are used in the cylinder head of diesel engine with common rail fuel injection where the fuel line passes through.
